Nothing, it’s a brilliant professional, business networking tool.

But too many people are either overlooking it, or using it incorrectly.

LinkedIn’s stated mission is simple: connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful. Microsoft paid US$26 billion in 2016 to ‘bring together the world’s leading professional cloud and the world’s leading professional network’.

Not to be another Facebook or Twitter.

It’s all about professional visibility, credibility and connecting with other business people. Like networking with potential clients, referral partners, likeminded professionals, new employees and suppliers in real life. And, as the world’s largest professional network, with 830 million members – that’s a lot of would-be contacts!

But you need to think about LinkedIn differently to the personal platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, if you want to make the most of its business networking power. When you’re setting up your profile and/or company page, sharing posts and commenting on other people’s articles, remember to wear your professional persona. Like you would at work. Save the holiday snaps and political debates for after work, family get-togethers, or your personal socials.

Used incorrectly, LinkedIn can quickly tarnish your credibility and your brand, but used well it can make an enormous positive impact on your business/career; building awareness around your brand, boosting your profile and helping you connect with the right people.

Now that’s good business networking.
